MEMO: Section 232 Steel/Aluminum derivative tariffs
Memo from Pegasus Shipping Inc. CHB:
Dear all,
Customs issued a notification last Friday afternoon regarding Section 232 Steel/Aluminum derivative tariffs and added many HTS codes to this list. This takes effect today, August 18, 2025. It is highly recommended that you look over this list to see if items you are importing have been included. Some items such as Flatware (i.e HTS heading 8211, 8215), and even some consumer products such as cleaning detergent (HTS heading 3402 for example), were added to this list. This means if the product you are importing has steel packaging for example, you will have to separate the cost of the steel/metal packaging from the total product cost, and the steel/aluminum packaging will need to pay the 50% tariff and the non-steel/aluminum portion will have to pay the Country specific IEEPA reciprocal tariff. If your product's HTS code is on the list, but does not contain any steel/aluminum components, then this will not affect you. Note that Section 232 Tariffs do NOT stack with IEEPA Country Reciprocal tariffs, however it does stack with China Section 301 tariff and Fentanyl Tariff. Again, please make sure to double check the updated list to see if your product may be affected.
